Hydraulic Cylinders

A hydraulic cylinder is a hydraulic actuator that converts hydraulic energy into mechanical energy to achieve linear reciprocating motion (or oscillating motion). It features a simple structure and reliable operation. When used for reciprocating motion, it eliminates the need for speed reduction devices, with no transmission clearance and smooth movement—thus being widely used in hydraulic systems of various machinery. The output force of a hydraulic cylinder is proportional to the effective area of the piston and the pressure difference between its two sides. A hydraulic cylinder consists of a cylinder barrel and head, piston and piston rod, sealing device, buffer device, and exhaust device. The buffer and exhaust devices are optional depending on specific application scenarios, while the others are essential components.

Classification of Hydraulic Cylinders

Based on the structural form of commonly used hydraulic cylinders, they can be categorized into three types. Hydraulic cylinders for sanitation garbage trucks come in diverse structural forms, with multiple classification methods:

By movement mode: linear reciprocating type and rotary oscillating type.

By hydraulic pressure action: single-acting type and double-acting type.

By structural form: Piston type, plunger type, multi-stage telescopic sleeve type, rack and pinion type, etc.

By mounting type: Tie rod type, trunnion type, foot-mounted type, hinge pin type, etc.

By pressure class: 16 MPa, 25 MPa, 31.5 MPa, etc.

Piston-Type Hydraulic Cylinders

Piston-type hydraulic cylinders can be divided into two structures: single-rod type and double-rod type. Their fixing methods include cylinder barrel fixing and piston rod fixing, and they are available in single-acting and double-acting types based on hydraulic pressure action. In a single-acting hydraulic cylinder, pressure oil is supplied to only one chamber, and the cylinder achieves unidirectional movement through hydraulic pressure; the reverse movement is realized by external forces (such as spring force, self-weight, or external load). In a double-acting hydraulic cylinder, the piston moves in both directions through alternating oil supply to the two chambers, driven by hydraulic pressure.

It is equipped with a piston rod on only one side of the piston, resulting in different effective areas of the two chambers. When the oil supply volume is the same, the piston movement speed varies depending on which chamber is supplied with oil. When the load force to be overcome is the same, the required oil supply pressure differs with different oil inlet chambers—or in other words, after the system pressure is set, the load forces that the hydraulic cylinder of the sanitation garbage truck can overcome in both movement directions are different.
